Today I tried something a little different. Instead of hitting the escarpment as usual, I decided to explore a little gem hiding in the middle of Mangerton. Mangerton reserve is a small reserve hiding an abundance of birds both big and small. I was astounded at the variety of species and the beautiful colours – unfortunately my camera was on 20160814_095606loan, so I could only use my phone today… oh well, it was great to see the birds playing and foraging anyway!

This reserve has had some serious attention from volunteers in the past, but still needs some work in respect to Stinging Nettle and Lantana. The tracks are still very well defined so it’s good to see the locals are getting out and about enjoying this little oasis so close to the CBD of Wollongong. A little creek runs through the middle and I was lucky enough to see a log full of fungus. Some of the trees are astoundingly old and it’s really enjoyable walking through this serene space.

If you’re interested in checking it out, entry is via various streets in the Mangerton area, however the Heaslip Street park entrance is easy to get to and park.
